Pinoy Rock, or Filipino Rock, is the brand of rock music produced in the Philippines or by Filipinos. It has become as diverse as the Rock music genre itself, and bands adopting this style are now further classified under more specific genres or combinations of genres like alternative rock, post-grunge, ethnic, new wave, pop rock, punk rock, funk, reggae, heavy metal and ska. Because these genres are generally considered to fall under the broad Rock music category, Filipino Rock may be more specifically defined as Rock music with Filipino cultural sensibilities.

QUESO

QUESO
Brief History: 1994. Queso started out using the name Cheese. It all began as something to do after classes. Enzo Ruidera, 2ts Calinawan and Pow Rosal were schoolmates and decided to form a band. Eventually things got serious and they were winning battle of bands left and right. The kids thought this might lead somewhere and eventually got Ian Tayao, cousin to Pow Rosal to take on vocal duties. At the time both parties were starting to write original songs. So by the time they were ready to play they were already playing original songs in a time were playing covers was the cool thing. Landing regular gigs at hot spots back then like Club Dredd and Yosh café, they steadily got noticed and slowly earned a following. CJ Olaguera who was constantly with the band eventually learned to play percussions and was a logical addition to the band because he was already always there anyway and he added new texture to the sound of the band. By the time, they were regulars at a number of bars and clubs. 8 Toleran, a neighbor and former guitarist of the band Piranha asked Ian if he could auditon and join the band. As fate would have it, the band was actually looking for another guitar player. He fit in perfectly and he was in like that. RT de Ano, is another friend of the band and a dj. He was another logical choice to be absorbed into the band because he was always there anyways and the idea of having a dj in the band was shared by all of the members. By 1997, the band release and sold a two-song demo, the songs “Fine” and “The Way” were in it. Five thousand copies was sold out in a week. “Fine” eventually garnered airplay on NU107 and eventually hit the charts. The band was signed by Warner Music Philippines. 1998, the self-titled debut album “Cheese” was released. Critics and fans alike received it beautifully. The singles “10xkarma” and “Fine” climbed the charts and the band was nominated on a number of categories at the ’99 NU107 Rock Awards. Maly Andres, the producer of the album won “Producer of the Year” for his work on that album. The album went on to win an Awit Award for for Rom Villaseran’s work on the album cover layout. The band went on to a successful tour of the album, even going to Korea to represent the Philippines in the 2000 Pusan Rock Festival. After touring and playing provinces, special events, clubs and bars. The band went on to write new materials. Biboy Garcia who went on to record with the band on their sophomore effort replaced RT de Ano. 2001 saw the release of Cheese’s second effort entitled “Pilipinas”. The album was critically acclaimed, named “the richest rock release of that year”. The album went on to win “Vocalist of the year”, “People’s Choice Award” and “Album of the Year” in the 2001 NU107 Rock awards. The band went on to tour the new album, successfully. 2003, Queso officially announced that they were changing their name to Queso from Cheese because that is what the kids were calling them and it was only logical. That same year drummer Pow Rosal was replaced by drummer Robert dela Cruz. Robert came in to continue touring the album all throughout the country. 2004, the band goes back to the studio to write new materials. 2005, Queso releases a DVD documentary about the band, members and their exploits. A year after, 2006, the band finishes recording and releases their latest self-titled effort “Queso”. Again, locked and loaded, the band is poised yet again to smash barriers and open minds with their “don’t give a f*ck” attitude and music. The band regularly plays school events, clubs and bars, special events and personally organized concerts or events by the band themselves.

PAROKYA NI EDGAR

PAROKYA NI EDGAR
Parokya ni Edgar[1] (English translation: Parish of Edgar) is a Filipino band that was formed in 1993 by a group of college students. kamikazee

kamikazee
The band is composed of five members who met in college at the College of Fine Arts of the University of the Philippines Diliman. Kamikazee's early gigs were mostly on campus events in UP Diliman like the annual UP Fair. Before they were signed in a major label, they went by the name "Kamikazee Cornflakes" (eventually shortened to its current state as "Kamikazee" which is easier to remember). Their early shows included renditions of the songs "Mmm Sarap", "Tsinelas", a cover of Ariel Rivera's "Sana Kahit Minsan", and Britney Spears' Lucky. They were known for using expletives, suggestive movements, and references to genitalia in their UP Diliman performances. Kamikazee released their first self titled album in 2002. The album's carrier single was a heavy cover version of the Britney Spears song "Lucky". In 2005, the band released "Chiksilog" as part of the compilation album Rok On!. Other notable songs include "Girlfriend", "Ung Tagalog", "Tsinelas" and their cover song of Ariel Rivera's "Sana Kahit Minsan". In 2006 they released their second album, Maharot. The carrier single of the album was "Narda", which is thought to be about the fictional Filipina heroine Darna. "Narda" was a popular hit in 2006, and gained constant airplays in radios on the same year. Later in 2009, "Narda" was be used as a soundtrack for GMA Network's primetime show Darna which stars Marian Rivera in her title role. The band maintains close ties with another popular Filipino band, Parokya ni Edgar (PNE). Chito Miranda, PNE's vocalist, met the band members in college as he was also studying in the College of Fine Arts. In events with Parokya ni Edgar on the line-up, one band's singer would normally jam with the other band. On Parokya ni Edgar's live sessions, Contreras frequently joined Miranda on songs like "Okatokat", "Chikinini" and "The Yes Yes Show." Jay does back-up vocals to PNE's hit song "The Order Taker" while Linao was on lead guitars. In turn, Kaye Abad, Chito's former girlfriend, was on back-up vocals in Kamikazee's song "Martyr Nyebera". Sarah Abad-Contreras, sister of Kaye Abad was married to Jay Contreras on February 12, 2009 held at Paco Park. The 3rd Album "Long Time Noisy" took the band 3 years to construct as the band balanced their tough schedules. The album was recorded at Tower of Doom Studios with producer Eric Perlas.

The band won an inter school Battle of the Bands and spent the prize money in recording a demo – an investment that landed them a two-album record deal with EMI Philippines. BAMBOO

BAMBOO
Francisco "Bamboo" Mañalac serves as the band's frontman. Contrary to popular belief, the band is not named after him. According to Ira Cruz, the guitarist, the word bamboo relates to strength and durability with an island feel to it.[1] Also, it's very Filipino and Asian at the same time. Two of its members, Bamboo Mañalac and Nathan Azarcon, were formerly part of Rivermaya. The other two members, Ira Cruz and Vic Mercado, were former instrumentalists of another band, Passage. Ira Cruz and Nathan Azarcon were also former members of the band Kapatid during that time.[2] Four years after their departure from Rivermaya, Mañalac and Azarcon caught up again with each other, during which Azarcon introduced him to Ira Cruz and Vic Mercado. [edit]Music career Bamboo's debut album, As The Music Plays, was released in February 2004 where it received positive response from fans and critics alike. The album also won numerous awards at the AWIT Awards, NU 107 Rock Awards, and MTV Pilipinas 2004. Their second album, Light Peace Love, which was released in 2005, consists of ten songs with differing moods and subjects, and took only 3 months to record. This album has a softer sound with both its lyrics and delivery. For this album, the band added more strings and a variety of other instruments, including a trumpet. The band admitted that this album had a personal feel to it. They experimented with several new styles that may please new listeners, at the risk of disappointing fans of the more conventional rock of their first album. Their third album, We Stand Alone Together, was released in 2007 with participation of JOSHUA "JESSA". It contains revived local songs such as Buklod's Tatsulok and international songs such as Paul Simon's "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" from different generations. It also includes bonus tracks like unplugged versions of their hit songs from previous albums such as "Mr. Clay", "These Days", and "Hallelujah". Once again, opting to do away with the conventional rock image that was attached to them , they produced sounds which were more jazzy than expected. Star Records--backed up by ABS-CBN TV Production and MYX--produced and created the official soundtrack for the tele-epiko "Rounin", wherein the title track “Argos” was performed by Bamboo. A new avenue was opened to the band, as “Argos” is said to be the band’s first venture to record a song for a primetime television show. It is also the first time for the multi-awarded band and Star Records to work together.[3] The band is also part of the “Days of Peace” Campaign by UNICEF with Gary Valenciano.[4] The band's Tomorrow Becomes Yesterday album achieved platinum status on September 28, 2008- two days after its release.

Castillo recruited former band mates from The Aga Muhlach Experience Mike Dizon (of The Teeth) to play drums and Myrene Academia (of Imago) to handle bass duties. Marasigan was a judge at a contest where Marc Abaya jammed to a Beastie Boys song with his band, Shirley Beans. He was then recruited by Marasigan to be their vocalist and later replaced by Mong Alcaraz of Chicosci. Abaya was still in college at the time, and Marasigan would still tour occasionally with the Eraserheads, but these weren’t hindering factors for Sandwich, as there were many session musicians ready to take over in case of a member’s absence. They signed with Sony Music, and released their debut album, Grip, Stand, Throw, with much success, thanks to its carrier single, "Butterfly Carnival." The band won three awards at the 1999 NU 107 Rock Awards: Album of the Year, Best New Artist, and Song of the Year. They released their second album, Four-Track Mind, in 2000; it was awarded Album of the Year at the Rock Awards in 2001. Sandwich then parted ways with Sony Music and released their third album, Thanks To The Moon’s Gravitational Pull, in 2003. It was under distribution by PolyEast Records. Abaya left Sandwich in 2005, in an effort to cope with the difficulty of juggling his job as an MTV VJ, and his obligations to his other band, Kjwan. Marasigan has since taken over sole vocal duties. After Abaya’s departure, the band wrote songs for soundtracks, such as "Humanda Ka," which was done for the online game, Tantra, and "Nginiig" for the ABS-CBN show of the same name. Mong Alcaraz of Chicosci joined the band late 2005 to solidify Sandwich’s new sound and assume guitar duties Abaya left behind. They released their first album with Marasigan as the sole frontman, Five On The Floor, in early 2006. In late-October 2006, their songs "Sugod" and "DVDx" became available in the online music game O2Jam. The video for "Sugod" won five major awards at the 2006 MTV Pilipinas Video Awards including Video of the Year, Best Director, and Best Editing. Recently, Sandwich members Mong Alcaraz and Myrene Acamedia respectively won the best guitarist and best bassist awards in recent NU Rock Awards 2006. DVDX also won the best music video award for 2007. In 2007, Sandwich sang "Zaido" from the former fantaserye action series, "Zaido: Pulis Pangkalawakan" was formerly aired on GMA 7. That song was composed by Raimund Marasigan. The band welcomed 2008 with their new album "< S > Marks The Spot" and as a celebration to their 10th Anniversary. Their music has much evolved overtime from heavy and underground sounds like grunge, hard rock, and rap-rock from their early albums to a more youthful and dynamic music since “Five On The Floor”.

THE DAWN

THE DAWN
The Dawn is a Filipino rock band which achieved commercial success during the late 1980s in the Philippines. The band broke up in 1995 with lead vocalist Jett Pangan forming another band, the Jett Pangan Group. The Dawn reunited in late 1999. The Dawn was formed in 1985 by Teddy Diaz (vocals and guitars), JB Leonor (drums), Jett Pangan (lead vocals) and Clay Luna (bass). The band's name was derived from a portrait of theHoly Spirit that symbolized the dawn of a new day (probably found in a book given by the Sisters of the Holy Spirit to Teddy Diaz,[1] as well as a crucifix which Teddy also received from the same sisterhood), called The Dawning of the Holy Spirit.[2] Diaz, Leonor and Luna initially wanted a female vocalist; but in the course of their search, Jett Pangan auditioned and got the trio's unanimous nod. The quartet began performing in clubs and eventually recorded a demo of a song entitled "Enveloped Ideas," a copy of which they submitted to DWXB 102.7, a now-defunct MetroManila–based FM radio station that played Alternative rock and New Wave music. It topped the radio station's charts in 1986, helping the group gain a cult following.[3] Heavily influenced by the New Wave genre of the 1980s, "Enveloped Ideas" is distinct for its introductory operatic vocals a la Klaus Nomi. While The Dawn was in search of a major record label, Luna left the band to immigrate to the US.Carlos "Caloy" Balcells, bass player of another Filipino group, the Cicada Band, soon replaced him. The Dawn ca. late 80's (L-R, front to rear) the late Teddy Diaz, Jett Pangan, JB Leonor and Carlos Balcells In 1986, The Dawn signed with OctoArts International and, the next summer, released their eponymous debut album, which gained commercial success. ManyTemplate:Who felt that The Dawn would fill the void left behind by the Juan de la Cruz Band when their music slowly faded in the 1980s. At the height of their popularity in 1988, and just weeks after the release of their second album I Stand With You, Teddy Diaz was stabbed to death in front of his girlfriend's house on August 21, 1988 by two men allegedly under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Despite the demise of Diaz, his influence is still felt among many guitarists today and he has become a legend among many Filipino musicians. The Dawn still considers Diaz to be the band's driving force to this day.[citation needed] The band continued to play, at one time employing the services of a masked guitarist (nicknamedZorro by some fans) in the absence of a permanent guitar player. Atsushi Matsuura, a Japaneseguitarist who had earlier released a solo album in the Philippines under Ivory Records, took on lead guitar duties in January 1989. He was later replaced by Francis Reyes, former Afterimageguitarist, who was also a disc jockey at NU-107, a local alternative rock radio station. Reyes also happened to be Diaz's close friend. Classically trained session keyboardist Millette Saldajeno also joined the band in 1990 but was later replaced by Isidore Fernandez in 1992

AFTER IMAGE

AFTER IMAGE
Afterimage was a Filipino Alternative Rock / pop rock band who was active in the 1990s. The group disbanded after 11 years and made three studio albums. After disbanding, Wency Cornejo, the band vocalist, pursued a solo career. Afterimage was the band behind the commercially popular songs "Habang May Buhay ['While There's Life']," "Next in Line", and "Mangarap Ka [Dream)." The band's first album, entitled Touch the Sun, was released in 1992 on Dyna Records (now Dyna Music). Among the eight songs that the album contained, four were released as singles: ("[Bai] Sa Langit ang Ating Tagpuan," "Only You," "Next in Line," and "Pagtawid"). The title of the album, which was the concluding part of the lyric to "Next in Line," was said to have just been a spontaneous utter of phrase which Cornejo made during the recording session for the said song. The band's having thought that the phrase--"touch the sun"--had captured the essence and concept of the entire album prompted them to use it as the album's title. The recurrent theme of the songs in the album was a personal expression of hopes, frustrations, and self-renewal—which the band hoped to touch not only their own lives but also the lives of other people.[citation needed] The album is also said to be a celebration of about 4 years of musical experimentation. According to them, "It is quite difficult to put all the songs in the album in one perspective, considering they encompass so many growths the band has undergone."[citation needed] The band was composed of five members: Bobit Uson on Bass Guitar, Chuck Isidro on Lead Guitar, Rogie Callejo on Drums, Arnold Cabalza on keyboards and Wency Cornejo on vocals. Francis Reyes (The Dawn) was the former guitarist of this band before Chuck Isidro (6cyclemind). In 1994 at the height of the first band craze in the Philippine music scene, Afterimage released their second album titled Tag-araw, Tag-ulan. The album's name was taken from two singles from the album, the album's carrier single "Tag-ulan" topped many charts in the Philippines and was awarded a Gold Recorda Award, later the follow-up single "Mangarap Ka" became a great hit for the band & at the 1995 Awit Awards it was named Album of the year, A Few months after winning the awards Niño Mesina became the band's newest bassist making Bobit Uson hold the guitar for the band together with Chuck Isidro. In 2001, After Image was disbanded due to manager conflict. But in 2008, after 7 years of disbanded, the band returned and reunited again for their new album, "Our Place Under The Sun." from Viva Records since their last album in 1995 from Dyna Records when Wency Cornejo went solo and moved to Viva Records the following year.

MARKUS HIGHWAY

MARKUS HIGHWAY
He currently goes under the stage name or band name, Markus Highway. Eraserheads During his days as lead guitarist for the Eraserheads, Adoro only had a few contributions when it came to songwriting. He would compose one song per album, which were usually album fillers, like "Punk Zappa" in the album, Circus, and "Southsuperhiway" in the album, Natin99. The most contributions he had ever given to the band was in the album Carbon Stereoxide, in which he wrote the songs "Pula", "Wala", and "Escalator Alligator". Marcus' style of lead guitar was a very significant piece to the Eraserheads' sound, and to a greater extent, the sound that came to define Pinoy alternative rock. His minimalist approach contrasted with the more "flashier" style of most local guitarists of the time. Instead of long, epic solos, Adoro preferred "pretty little ditties" that often complement the tone of the song. His "less is more" method resembles that of many guitarists from Manila's 80s underground punk scene, particularly Bobby Balingit (The Wuds) and Resty Cornejo (Identity Crisis). During the band's later years, Marcus began to acquire a fascination with electric guitar noises and environmental sounds which he would incorporate to his style as the band's music progressed and became more experimental. One of the best examples of Adoro's lead guitar skills from his Eraserhead years would be in the song "Maskara" where he played backwards in one take.[citation needed] Projects after Eraserheads Kamonkamon" After the band released their 8th and final album, Carbon Stereoxide in 2001, Adoro started working on a solo project called "Kamonkamon," which tells the adventures of his pet dog with the same name. The compilation of songs were mixed and produced by Marcus himself. Ranging from electronica, dance, to folk, and alternative music, most of its tracks were collaborations with artists, such as Pinoy rock legend Pepe Smith, Dong Abay, and an artist named Dangwa. Its EP version, available only cassettes in Sarabia Optical, a shop in his collegiate school, University of the Philippines, Diliman, was released in 2002. Adoro stated, in an interview, that part of the reason why he created the project was to make money that will hopefully be enough to buy himself a surfboard, a sport he picked up during his stay in La Union.[citation needed] Adoro explains in an interview with Philmusic.com that "Kamonkamon" was "meant as a hype." According to him, around 2002, BMG records had already bought the whole work, consisting of a comicbook, the comicbook soundtrack and a video documentary CD. The album, though, was not to be released until 2005. In addition, BMG would only publish the work if the comicbook is shortened, which according to Adoro, defeats the purpose of the comicbook soundtrack and the idea of the whole work. He says that "Kamonkamon" "is a highly philosophical work," so he declined with the condition. "The eventual release of Kamonkamon would be just the tip of the iceberg so to speak," says Adoro.[1] Marcus was not the first Eraserhead to produce his own solo project. In 2000, lead vocalist Ely Buendia released his album, Wanted: Bedspacer. Belma en Luis" In the same year "Kamonkamon" was released, Eraserheads vocalist, Ely Buendia, left the band to form The Mongols. Adoro, later, also decided to quit. He would eventually move to La Union and was unheard from until the April of 2005. An e-mail from him was sent to PhilMusic.com[2] about a new project he was working on, called "Surfernando: The Adventures of Belma and Luis," with a poster art of a pencil stuck in a person's nose. The EP turned up once again at Sarabia Optical. It is also available in different album covers and titles: Urfer Magazine (Mag:Net Café), Duckdive (Bigsky), American Gurl (United States version), and Submarine (Marikinaversion) In the interview with Philmusic.com, Adoro explains that "Belma en Luis" is half of all the songs for a "pinoy surfing album." Surfernando is a character. He wrote the songs in 2003 after three years of surfing. He recorded and released his work on major labels, and has now shopped for a deal with Warner Music. The Surfernando songs were recorded in his new band Markus Highway's debut album called Behold, Rejoice! Surfernando Is Hear Nah.. The sound of Markus Highway ranges from just him and a guitar "to a big full band with horns section and all." Career after Eraserheads Adoro's current band name is "Markus Highway (a wordplay on "Marcos Highway," a Philippine road). Adoro explains that "Markus Highway" is just a rock and roll name that he likes and he wants to keep at the moment. He says that he's good with wordplay. He reveals that most of the Eraserheads album titles came from him. "I like changing names because it's an old rock n roll tradition. All the old travelling bluesmen used different aliases and my favorite cool bands do it. I like Markus Highway for the Surfernando song," says Adoro. Adoro had changed his stage name or band name quite often since 2001. His different band names since 2001 include Surfernando, The Gumamela Band, Kamonkamon, The Flaming Katols, Markus Regime (a wordplay on Marcos Regime), The Mamones (a name spoof of Mamon, a Filipino sponge cake, and The Ramones) and Talampunay Band. He eventually settled to Markus Highway since 2007.[3] Adoro along with former bandmates, Buddy Zabala and Raimund Marasigan performed for an event at the Millennia Club called "Marooned", a production of UP bands from past and present. Buendia was invited to the gig, but he did not attend. "Batch 88",[4] from Belma en Luis, was one of the songs that was jammed by the trio. When asked about his career plans in the Philmusic.com interview, Adoro said that he plans to get session musicians to play in the recording of the Surfernando album, get a band ready for gig tours, and work with other willing back-up bands as well. He said that he had been backed by artists such as Mano-manu and Sunflower Day Camp. He just finished a low-key bar tour with the band, Mayonnaise and Sunflower Day Camp. Adoro unexpectedly appeared in "LivELY: A Fundraising Concert for the Benefit of Ely Buendia" on January 28, 2007. Though not in the list of performers, Adoro suddenly walked on stage before Rivermaya had finished performing. He then borrowed Mike Elgar's guitar and played areggae rendition of the Eraserheads song, "Huwag Mo Nang Itanong", and a song from his new album.[5] Marcus Adoro has a new band named Markus Highway under Warner Music Philippines, their first album "Behold, Rejoice! Surfernando Is Hear Nah." was released on February 2008. Life after Eraserheads Adoro was interviewed by GMA-7 newscaster Jessica Soho on her show, "Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho." The topic is all about La Union which is now popular for beach surfers in the Philippines. He is now based in La Union and he enjoys his new life as a local surfer. In the Philmusic.com interview, Adoro says he surfs, but he doesn't join competitions. He does not compete because he says that surfing is not his profession, and he just enjoys the lifestyle. He has been making documentaries about surfing since 2002. He also directed the short film "The Artist Is In" which premiered along with Ely Buendia's short film "Waiting Shed". It was followed by "Violator Copy," a compilation of Marcus' unreleased videoworks which featured various local artists and surfers, Jericho Rosales, Dong Abay, and Pepe Smith.

Rico Blanco (born in Manila on March 17, 1973) is a Filipino singer, songwriter, musician and just recently an actor. As a solo artist and with his former band,Rivermaya, Blanco has so far recorded, written and produced more local and regional number one hits than any other musician since 1994; and has sold over a million albums in the Philippines and Southeast Asia during the period. Early career Rico was one of the founding members of Filipino rock band Rivermaya, in varying roles as vocalist, keyboardist, guitarist, and main songwriter from 1993 to 2007. Aside from his songwriter credits in his solo album and in Rivermaya, Blanco also arranged and wrote music for various side projects such as the United Nations MDG theme "Tayo Tayo Rin"; the Philippine Department of Tourism theme "Biyahe Tayo" (both of which were performed by veteran Filipino musicians, such as Freddie Aguilar, the Apo Hiking Society, Lea Salonga, and Sharon Cuneta). He also co-wrote a theme song for the Southeast Asian Games, "Posible". Rico Blanco is also a stage and film actor. He starred alongside Noel Cabangon and Joey Ayala in the Music Museum and 70s Bistro production of Jesus Christ Superstar and also starred alongside Epy Quizon and Christopher de Leon in the independent film Nasaan si Francis. He is also the voice behind Ryusuke (Ray) Minami in the Philippine edition of BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad. [4] He also directed several music videos, won an award for his work as musical scorer/arranger for HIT Productions. Blanco also dabbles in oil painting and photography. Among the albums Blanco produced are Slapshock's Project 11-41, Sugarfree's Sa Wakas, The Dawn's Salamat millennium edition single, and Teeth's I Was a Teenage Tree and Rivermaya's Free album which won him NU Rock award for Producer of the year. Blanco also used to host MYX Live, Blanco also composed scores for many commercials & other various corporate functions around the Philippines. In May 2007, Blanco announced his departure from Rivermaya. His last performance with Rivermaya was on May 4, 2007 at the Metro Bar (wherein two other high profile Filipino bands opened the show, Pupil and Sandwich; two spin-off bands of the legendary pop-rock group Eraserheads). It was coincidental that Rico’s first gig as singer for Rivermaya was also held at the Metro Bar (formerly known as Kampo). Furthermore, first ever Rivermaya gig (where Blanco was keyboardist) was in Las Pinas City in 1993 where the band was the opening act for Eraserheads.[1] In 2007, he launched a clothing line for Philippine clothing brand Human.[2] He also spent his time with philanthropic work. In late 2007 he came out of retirement to sing for the Sumilao farmers who walked 1,700 km fromBukidnon to reach Department of Agrarian Reform in Metro Manila. Blanco also wrote and produced an electronic dance music song titled "Control" for the album of Nancy Castiglione. Solo Artist In June 12, 2008 Warner Music Philippines, launched Rico's first single “Yugto” which marked his personal comeback and entry in the Filipino music industry as a solo artist. Critics and music fans immediately hail it as a neo-epic.[3] The song won a host of awards, among them 4 major Awit awards including Song of the Year.[4] His first album titled "Your Universe" was released on August 8, 2008. The 10-track CD is a unique fusion of diverse sounds, among them the ethno-rock Yugto, the heart-tugging title track Your Universe, the rockabilly/punk feel of Ayuz, the sweet, Pinoy-folk Para Hindi Ka Mawala, and the sing-along anthem Antukin.[5] Also notable is his return to his roots as a keyboard player as evidenced by the infusion of synthesizer and electronic elements throughout the album. Currently, Rico's live band is usually composed of Robert Dela Cruz (of Queso and Skychurch) on drums and Ricci Gurango (formerly of Mojofly and Hungry Young Poets) on bass, while Rico plays guitars and keyboards. Many other session musicians join him on stage from time to time. In November 2008, just a few months after starting his career as a solo artist, Rico won the Vocalist of the Year award in the NU Rock Awards. In December 2008, he was heralded RX93.1 OPM Solo Artist of the Year for 2008. He also opened for Myx Mo 2008 and performed "Yugto." Aside from his band, The Mandaluyong Children's Choir, Manila Symphony Orchestra, Kulintangan musicians (headed by Malou Matute), and various Percussionists (headed by Iggy de Dios), all performed with him. The opening set was touted to be the biggest in the event's history. In February 2009, he won as "Best New Artist" in the MYX Music Awards 2009. Then, Blanco was picked by Unilever Philippines to re-write and sing a version of the regional campaign song of Close Up toothpaste, the outcome is a single called "Come Closer". Rico sang together with Imago vocalist Aia De Leon, and Sandwich frontman Raimund Marasigan, on “Ako ang Simula,” the theme song for a campaign which calls on Filipinos, especially the youth, to register, vote, and make the 2010 elections work. When super typhoons ravaged the Philippines in September 2009, Rico responded quickly by writing and recording and releasing "Bangon" to raise awareness, and ultimately, funds to help the victims of the typhoons. Rico gave away the song as a free download to give hope to the victims, salute the heroes, and inspire people to continue helping. Blanco also said that he is waiving all royalties due to him for the mobile downloads of the song, which he will instead give to affected families.[6][7] In December 2009, Blanco launched his new music video for the single "Ayuz", it features his dance tribute to Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire, with Cristine Reyes as special guest. In May 2010, Blanco was announced to be on the cast of ABS-CBN's newest show Imortal which stars John Lloyd Cruz and Angel Locsintogether with Maja Salvador which will air soon. This was followed by the launch of Rico Blanco's very own company, Balcony Entertainment, in cooperation with Warner Music Philippines. The same year, Rico Blanco launched his first album "Your Universe" in other Asian countries such as Singapore and Hong Kong. The Asian release featured a new single "Neon Lights", the song quickly gained the no. 1 spot in Hong Kong charts beating other artists such as Justin Bieber, Wonder Girls and Mika.[8] Origin Hailing from Pacita, San Pedro, Laguna, Philippines, Rico Blanco was an active youth leader and became the founding Sangguniang Kabataan chairman in his hometown. His mother is Purita Granados-Blanco and his father is Rene Aldeguer Blanco. He has 3 siblings Heart Blanco-Elizon, Rey "King" Blanco and Patrice Blanco. He graduated grade school at O. B. Montessori Center, high school at the Benedictine Abbey (San Beda College Alabang) and finished hisManagement Economics degree at the Ateneo de Manila University at the early age of 19. When he was younger, Rico was one of the main soloists in his parish's choir in Pacita Complex, San Pedro, Laguna, often singing the most challenging soprano and bass parts because of his wide vocal range. He is a totally self taught musician and used to practice playing the piano more than five hours a day. Musical influences At a young age, Rico listened heavily to his uncle's records which included the Beatles, jazz and 1970s rock. He moved on to appreciate late 1970s to 1980s punk rock, post punk, synth pop and new wave artists (mostly from the U.K.) such as XTC, The Cure, The Smiths, U2, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, OMD, Tears for Fears, Ultravox, New Order, Madness, Terry Hall, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Midnight Oil(Aus), among others. He also listened to Filipino artists such as Deans December, Violent Playground, Identity Crisis, Urban Bandits, Joey Ayala, among others. The music he listened to growing up is largely credited for his musical style.[5] Endorsements A trendsetter, Rico Blanco and his wide influence has always made him one of the most sought after endorsers. He has already endorsed brands in telecom, fastfood, home entertainment, software, and mobile phones. In 2003, Blanco was the first solo musician tapped to be a Pepsi ambassador when the brand decided to enlist local endorsers. The success of this bold and unprecedented move started a trend in musicians becoming endorsers for major brands. Blanco also previously endorsed HUMAN, a clothing label where he had his own line of shirts.

STONEFREE

STONEFREE
Stone Free is a classic rock cover band from Dhaka, Bangladesh. The band consists of Chotu Khan on vocals and guitar, Mishu Safa on bass guitar, Fahim Huq on lead guitar and vocals, Nadeer Ahmed on percussions, and Emrul Emon on drums.[1] While each of the band members have played with various other local bands (such as Maqsood o' Dhaka, Winning, James, Renaissance, etc.) since the late 1980s, the band made their debut as Stone Free on 27 December 2007 at Le Saigon in Dhaka. Biography The name of the band is taken from Jimi Hendrix's song by the same name. Different from the way Hendrix refers to the title, according to Chotu, Stone Free to them refers to "getting 'stoned' for free without the use of any drugs, alcohol or narcotics - just pure music". Their concerts are credited to be extremely interactive, high energy and seamless performances where the band gets the entire audience to sing along with them. Stone Free is not known for playing the most commercially successful numbers, but songs that they listen to and want to perform, which incidentally may or may not have been commercially very successful song.[2] The band’s repertoire consists of songs by The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Simon & Garfunkel, America, Bob Marley, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Neil Young,Crosby, Stills & Nash, Dire Straits, U2, Led Zeppelin, Van Morrison, J. J. Cale, Sting, Santana,The Police, and several others from the classic rock era. Pink Floyd covers In January, 2009 Stone Free was commissioned by Excalibur Entertainments to perform a tribute to Pink Floyd. As Stone Free didn't have a keyboardist in their lineup, they called on Arshad Amin (bassist of the band Rock Strata) and Saad Chowdhury (pianist of Jazzy Chopsticks) to put the keys and synths together. As a 7-member band, their rendition of Pink Floyd numbers on 10 and 16 April 2009 has been highly appreciated by the audience. They performed a total of 2 hours of Pink Floyd songs from 7 different albums, including Wish You Were Here,Meddle, More, Dark Side of The Moon, Animals, The Wall and The Final Cut. Subsequently, Stone Free were commissioned to perform at the Winter Garden of The Dhaka Sheraton Hotel on 3 July 2009. The concert was titled “Stone Free presents Pink Floyd”, which also included songs from 2 other albums by Pink Floyd - A Momentary Lapse of Reasonand The Division Bell. Laser lights, a massive stage designed as per The Wall concerts of Pink Floyd, a bit of theatrics and choreography - all the essential characteristics of a Pink Floyd concert were accommodated into this performance which was performed seamlessly with each song played back-to-back over a period of 3 hours.[3] They performed a 20 minutes rendition of "Echoes" which was done to perfection. The performance also included dramatic details such as dog barks and pig oinks as well as sounds of dropping bombs and ticking clocks which are integral to Pink Floyd songs. In an interview with Chotu, he said, "we wanted the music to be ours and as 'human' as possible - that is, we didn't just want to sample the clock ticks from the song "Time" by Pink Floyd - that would be too easy; rather, we made Arshad create the sound from scratch. That's where the fun is." The Pussycat Putuls featuring Tisa, Ulfath, and Nazia appeared as back-up vocals to Another Brick In the Wall II. Mushfiq of Rock Strata and Jawad of ’71 were also featured for lead and back-up vocals in various songs. Stone Free intends to take the Pink Floyd cover show on the road to different parts of the world, starting India, Thailand and Malaysia. Albums Stone Free has not released any of their self-composed music till date. According to Fahim, “we are having too much fun covering the music that we grew up listening to. Our own music will be a natural progression over time.” According to Chotu, “the band is composing and putting songs together, but we are in no hurry to publish them.” Appearances Stone Free's first appearance in the Dhaka music scene took place at Le Saigon in Dhaka on 27 December 2007. Since then Stone Free have been a regular feature at Le Saigon where they perform once every month. They can also be found playing at various other locations within Bangladesh. The band prefers to play small venues where they can easily interact and communicate with the audience. Stone Free were interviewed on Radio Foorti (Dhaka FM 88.0) on 2 May 2009 by RJ Asna. During the interview Stone Free played 3 songs live for the radio audience. Each of the band members maintain high profile day jobs. As such, they are limited to few appearances each month depending on each band member’s availability.
